Peace Poster Competition 2011/12
Theme Children Know Peace.
Matthew Elliott from Hawarden High School, sponsored by Flint & District Lions Club is the District winner of this year’s Peace Poster Competition and goes forward to the Multi District Finals next month to be held in Birmingham. His poster ’Peace is Childs Play’ judged by professional independent artists was the outright winner this year closely followed by Libby Horton from the Chase Academy sponsored by Cannock Lions and Bethan Evans from Church Stretton sponsored by Middle Marches Lions Club.
The judges were very impressed by both the standard of the artwork this year, feeling that the standard improves year upon year, and were especially taken by some of the ideas and concepts displayed to reflect the theme. In fact one of them told me that some of the ideas were far beyond what she would have expected from people so young, and ones that she herself would never have thought herself now, let alone at their age. This year saw an increase in entries with 13 clubs sponsoring 19 schools in all, and a magnificent 715 entries in total from all of the schools, but again we can do better and hopefully next year will see this total built on. The one problem that seems to occur, year on year is that some of the entries are not within the rules and would not , even if they had won been allowed to progress to the Multi District stage, the main problems being either size, (6 were too small) or paste on’s (collage x1). Sponsoring clubs do need to emphasise and reiterate to schools and art teachers that there are minimum & maximum sizes which have to be adhered to.
My thanks go to all the sponsoring clubs, Cannock, Ellesmere Port, Flint, Gnosall, Knutsford, Little Orme, Llandudno, Langollen, Middle Marches, Stone, Stoke on Trent, Tamworth & Wrexham for their support. Hopefully they will again support this excellent, low cost, but high profile competition which gets Lions Clubs good publicity amongst both the young and old in their local communities,
The competition was held at the Horse and Jockey again this year, with very few Lions unfortunately supporting the event. However I should personally like to thank DG Beryl & PDG Eric, 1st VDG Rob, DO’s John & Glennys Sanders & Pam, for turning up to support this worthy competition as the display did create a lot of interest from the customers using the venue, asking lots of questions about the competition which was very positive and creating good publicity. Next year we are reverting to having the judging take place on the same day as the November Cabinet Meeting, where the hopefully far more
Lions will be able to see the art work on display.
Finally I should like to wish, on behalf of DG Beryl, Youth Team Chair Glennys and all Lions in District 105BS Matthew all the best in the Multi District Competition.
